10 Vedic Math Tricks to Solve Calculations 10x Faster

Published on by Ankita Singh | Beads of Brilliance

What if your child could multiply large numbers, find squares, and solve complex calculations in seconds — all without a calculator? That's the power of Vedic Mathematics. These ancient Indian techniques, derived from the Vedas, offer elegant shortcuts that make arithmetic feel like magic.

What is Vedic Math?

Vedic Mathematics is a system of mathematical techniques compiled from ancient Indian scriptures (Vedas) by Sri Bharati Krishna Tirthaji in the early 20th century. It consists of 16 sutras (formulas) and 13 sub-sutras that provide shortcuts for arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and calculus.

Unlike conventional methods taught in schools, Vedic Math approaches problems from multiple angles, often reducing complex calculations to simple mental operations. Our Vedic Math programs teach these techniques in a structured, age-appropriate manner.

Trick 1: Multiply Any Number by 11 Instantly

To multiply a two-digit number by 11, simply add the two digits and place the sum between them.

Example: 36 × 11

  • Separate the digits: 3 _ 6
  • Add them: 3 + 6 = 9
  • Place in the middle: 396

Example: 85 × 11

  • 8 + 5 = 13 (carry the 1)
  • Result: 935

Trick 2: Square Any Number Ending in 5

To square a number ending in 5, multiply the first digit by (first digit + 1), then append 25.

Example: 75²

  • First digit: 7
  • 7 × 8 = 56
  • Append 25: 5625

Example: 45² = 4 × 5 = 20, append 25 = 2025

Trick 3: Multiply Numbers Close to 100

When both numbers are near 100, use the "base method" for instant results.

Example: 97 × 96

  • Deficiencies from 100: 97 is -3, 96 is -4
  • Cross-subtract: 97 - 4 = 93 (or 96 - 3 = 93)
  • Multiply deficiencies: 3 × 4 = 12
  • Result: 9312

Trick 4: Subtract from 1000 (or Any Power of 10)

Use the "All from 9, last from 10" sutra. Subtract each digit from 9, except the last digit which you subtract from 10.

Example: 1000 - 647

  • 6 from 9 = 3
  • 4 from 9 = 5
  • 7 from 10 = 3
  • Result: 353

Trick 5: Multiply by 9 Using Fingers

For single-digit multiplication by 9, hold up all 10 fingers. Fold down the finger corresponding to the number you're multiplying. The fingers to the left give the tens digit, fingers to the right give the ones digit.

Example: 9 × 7

  • Fold down finger 7
  • Left side: 6 fingers (tens)
  • Right side: 3 fingers (ones)
  • Result: 63

Trick 6: Cross Multiplication (Urdhva Tiryak)

This powerful sutra allows you to multiply any two numbers mentally using a cross-pattern approach.

Example: 23 × 14

  • Step 1 (right × right): 3 × 4 = 12, write 2, carry 1
  • Step 2 (cross multiply and add): (2×4) + (3×1) = 8 + 3 = 11, plus carry 1 = 12, write 2, carry 1
  • Step 3 (left × left): 2 × 1 = 2, plus carry 1 = 3
  • Result: 322

Trick 7: Digital Roots for Quick Verification

Add all digits of a number repeatedly until you get a single digit. Use this to verify multiplication and addition results instantly.

Example: Verify 234 × 16 = 3744

  • Digital root of 234: 2+3+4 = 9 → 9
  • Digital root of 16: 1+6 = 7
  • 9 × 7 = 63 → 6+3 = 9
  • Digital root of 3744: 3+7+4+4 = 18 → 1+8 = 9 ✓

Trick 8: Divisibility Checks Made Easy

Vedic Math provides instant divisibility rules that go beyond the basic ones taught in school:

  • Divisible by 4: Check if the last two digits are divisible by 4
  • Divisible by 8: Check if the last three digits are divisible by 8
  • Divisible by 7: Double the last digit, subtract from remaining number. If result is divisible by 7, so is the original
  • Divisible by 11: Alternately add and subtract digits. If result is 0 or divisible by 11, the number is divisible by 11

Trick 9: Fast Addition Using Complements

When adding numbers close to round numbers, use complements to simplify the calculation.

Example: 198 + 297 + 396

  • Think: 200 + 300 + 400 = 900
  • Subtract the differences: 2 + 3 + 4 = 9
  • Result: 900 - 9 = 891

Trick 10: The Complement Method for Subtraction

For subtracting from round numbers, find the complement (what you need to add to reach the round number).

Example: 5000 - 2738

  • Complement of 2738 from 9999: 7261
  • Since we're subtracting from 5000 (not 10000): 5000 - 2738 = 2262
  • Quick method: All from 9, last from 10 applied to 2738 gives 7262, then adjust for 5000

When to Use Vedic Math

Vedic Math tricks are most powerful when:

  • Taking competitive exams where speed matters
  • Doing mental calculations in daily life (shopping, budgeting)
  • Building number confidence in children
  • Preparing for math olympiads and competitions
  • Complementing abacus training for maximum speed

At Beads of Brilliance, we combine Vedic Math with abacus training to give students a complete mental math toolkit. Our school math programs also integrate these techniques to help students excel in their regular curriculum.
