15 Mental Math Tricks Every Kid Should Know

Published on by Ankita Singh | Beads of Brilliance

Does your child struggle with math calculations? What if they could add, subtract, multiply, and divide numbers in their head — faster than reaching for a calculator? Mental math isn't a gift some children are born with. It's a skill that can be taught through simple tricks and regular practice.

At Beads of Brilliance , we've taught thousands of children to become confident mental calculators. Here are 15 of our favourite tricks that work for kids aged 5 to 14.

Addition Tricks

Trick 1: Make It a Round Number

When adding numbers close to a round number, round up first, then subtract the difference.

  • 48 + 36: Think 50 + 36 = 86, then subtract 2 → 84
  • 197 + 45: Think 200 + 45 = 245, then subtract 3 → 242

Trick 2: Break and Bridge

Split one number to make the addition easier.

  • 67 + 28: Break 28 into 3 + 25. So 67 + 3 = 70, then 70 + 25 = 95
  • 45 + 37: Break 37 into 5 + 32. So 45 + 5 = 50, then 50 + 32 = 82

Trick 3: Add from Left to Right

Instead of starting from the ones place (like school teaches), add the bigger values first.

  • 356 + 472: 300+400=700, 50+70=120, 6+2=8 → 700+120+8 = 828

Subtraction Tricks

Trick 4: Add Instead of Subtract

For subtraction, count up from the smaller number to the larger one.

  • 83 - 47: From 47, add 3 to get 50, add 30 to get 80, add 3 to get 83. Total added: 3+30+3 = 36

Trick 5: Round and Adjust

Round the number you're subtracting, then adjust.

  • 74 - 29: Think 74 - 30 = 44, then add back 1 → 45
  • 156 - 98: Think 156 - 100 = 56, then add back 2 → 58

Multiplication Tricks

Trick 6: Multiply by 5 (Halve and Multiply by 10)

To multiply any number by 5, divide it by 2 and multiply by 10.

  • 48 × 5: 48 ÷ 2 = 24, then 24 × 10 = 240
  • 126 × 5: 126 ÷ 2 = 63, then 63 × 10 = 630

Trick 7: Multiply by 9 (Multiply by 10, Subtract Once)

To multiply by 9, multiply by 10 and subtract the original number.

  • 7 × 9: 7 × 10 = 70, then 70 - 7 = 63
  • 23 × 9: 23 × 10 = 230, then 230 - 23 = 207

Trick 8: Multiply by 11 (Split and Add)

For two-digit numbers × 11, add the digits and place the sum in the middle.

  • 45 × 11: 4+5=9, place between → 495
  • 72 × 11: 7+2=9, place between → 792

Trick 9: Double and Halve

When multiplying, double one number and halve the other to make it easier.

  • 25 × 16: Double 25 = 50, halve 16 = 8. So 50 × 8 = 400
  • 15 × 14: Double 15 = 30, halve 14 = 7. So 30 × 7 = 210

Trick 10: Multiply Numbers Close to Each Other

For numbers near a base (like 10, 20, 50, 100), use the difference method.

  • 13 × 12: Base 10. Excesses: +3, +2. (13+2)×10 + 3×2 = 150 + 6 = 156

Division Tricks

Trick 11: Divide by 5 (Multiply by 2, Divide by 10)

To divide by 5, multiply by 2 and move the decimal point left.

  • 235 ÷ 5: 235 × 2 = 470, then ÷ 10 = 47

Trick 12: Check Divisibility Instantly

  • Divisible by 3: Add all digits. If the sum is divisible by 3, so is the number.
  • Divisible by 4: Check if the last two digits are divisible by 4.
  • Divisible by 6: Must be divisible by both 2 and 3.

Percentage & Fraction Tricks

Trick 13: Finding 10% Instantly

Just move the decimal point one place left. Then use it to find other percentages.

  • 10% of 450: 45
  • 20% of 450: 45 × 2 = 90
  • 5% of 450: 45 ÷ 2 = 22.5
  • 15% of 450: 45 + 22.5 = 67.5

Trick 14: Flip the Percentage

8% of 50 is the same as 50% of 8 = 4. Always flip to make it easier!

  • 4% of 75 = 75% of 4 = 3
  • 12% of 50 = 50% of 12 = 6

Trick 15: Squaring Numbers Ending in 5

Multiply the tens digit by (tens digit + 1), then append 25.

  • 35²: 3 × 4 = 12, append 25 → 1225
  • 85²: 8 × 9 = 72, append 25 → 7225

Frequently Asked Questions

At what age can kids learn mental math tricks?

Children as young as 5-6 years can start learning simple mental math tricks like rounding and breaking numbers. By age 7-8, they can handle more complex shortcuts like multiplication tricks and number splitting.

How long does it take for a child to master mental math?

With regular practice of 15-20 minutes daily, most children show noticeable improvement within 4-6 weeks. Mastery of advanced techniques typically takes 3-6 months of consistent practice.

Are mental math tricks better than using a calculator?

Mental math develops number sense, logical thinking, and brain agility that calculators cannot provide. Children who practice mental math perform better in exams, develop stronger problem-solving skills, and build mathematical confidence.
